One of our school goals is to produce graduates who can collaborate with their peers. In order for students to graduate with this skill they need lots of practice. It is important, therefore, to establish classroom norms for group work early in the year. One of the first day activities my seventh grade students do is the 100 numbers task from Sara Van Der Werf. Students are so engrossed in the activity (taking turns as a group finding the numbers 1-100 in order) that they don't even notice me going around the room and taking pictures. After time is up and I show them the pictures I took they are surprised every time. The engagement and the teamwork shown set the stage for a conversation about the expectations for teamwork in math class.
