Hands on project for scale factor, ratio of volumes, and ratio of areas

My favorite year end project that I do is with my 8th grade class. After state testing is done and students are doing everything they can to mentally check out for the year my eighth graders do their 3D scale factor project. They are instructed to bring in an item from home that they are going to recreate at a different scale. Students work in pairs or groups to scale up what ever item they have brought from home. They also have to find the ratio of the original and new surface areas and volumes. This activity helps to reinforce some of the eighth grade standards and bring a little art into the math classroom.
